NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister, on December 26, 2024. To honor his legacy, a state mourning period has been declared from December 27, 2024, to January 1, 2025, during which the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across India and in Indian missions abroad. The nation will also observe a state funeral for Dr. Singh, with a half-day holiday declared in government offices on the day.

Dr. Manmohan Singh was an iconic figure in Indian politics and economics. Born in 1932 in Gah, Punjab, he had an illustrious academic career, earning degrees from prestigious institutions like Cambridge and Oxford. He played a pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization as the Finance Minister between 1991 and 1996 and later served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014.
Dr. Singh’s leadership and policy reforms transformed India’s economy, earning him international recognition. His contributions were honored with numerous awards, including the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor.
