Rajkot: “Whenever the tabla resonates in Indian classical music, the name of Ustad Zakir Hussain will forever echo alongside its rhythms,” said Dr. Vivek Hirani while honoring the late tabla maestro during a special ceremony at Shri Arjunlal Hirani College of Journalism and Performing Arts, Rajkot. The event, held in the college’s central hall, celebrated the unparalleled contributions of Ustad Zakir Hussain to Indian and global music.
Dr. Vivek Hirani, the college’s Managing Trustee, highlighted Ustad Zakir Hussain’s extraordinary journey, emphasizing his role in elevating Indian classical music on the world stage. “He didn’t confine himself to classical music but made groundbreaking contributions to pop, jazz, and fusion genres, showcasing the versatility of the tabla,” he remarked.
Celebrating the Legacy of a Maestro
Ustad Zakir Hussain, a recipient of India’s prestigious Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, and multiple Musical Awards, was celebrated not only as a master of the Punjab Gharana but also as an ambassador of Indian culture. His compositions and collaborations broke geographical and musical barriers, leaving an indelible mark on the global music community.
At the ceremony, Dr. Bharatiben Rathod, Principal of the college, described the maestro as an eternal torchbearer of Indian music. “Though he is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through the rhythm of the tabla and the hearts of music lovers worldwide,” she said.

The event saw an enchanting performance by students from the college’s tabla department, including Hardik Machhoya, Rohan Vadukul, Sartajahsan Haji, and others. They performed Punjab Gharana bandishes and compositions by Ustad Zakir Hussain, offering a heartfelt tribute to the legendary musician.
Current and former students from the departments of singing, tabla, Kathak, and journalism gathered in large numbers, observing a two-minute silence in his memory. The program was skillfully conducted by Dr. Juliben Unadkat, while Dr. Jay Sevak and Dr. Kumar Pandya played pivotal roles in organizing the event.
