MUMBAI: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray has intensified his demand for a thorough investigation into alleged irregularities in road contracts awarded by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) during the tenure of Eknath Shinde as Maharashtra Chief Minister. Thackeray has requested that Mumbai Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW) or the Lokayukta conduct the inquiry.
At a recent press conference, Thackeray alleged that significant financial discrepancies occurred in road construction projects sanctioned during Shinde’s administration. He also called for the exclusion of Eknath Shinde, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, and Deepak Kesarkar—who were responsible for Mumbai city and suburban governance at the time—from any current administrative roles. These allegations are part of broader criticisms aimed at improving transparency and accountability in the BMC, India’s richest municipal body.
Eknath Shinde, currently serving as Deputy Chief Minister in the Devendra Fadnavis-led government, has dismissed these allegations as baseless. He asserted that previous investigations into similar claims failed to yield evidence of corruption, calling the accusations politically motivated.
This development comes amid heightened scrutiny of the BMC’s financial dealings, particularly after recent reports suggested irregularities in expenditures during the COVID-19 pandemic, including dubious contracts for health infrastructure and waste management projects.
