Gulzar’s 1975 cinematic gem, Aandhi, starring the legendary Sanjeev Kumar and Suchitra Sen, has completed 50 years this week. The film, often regarded as one of Gulzar’s finest directorial works, continues to hold a special place in Indian cinema. Veteran lyricist and scriptwriter Javed Akhtar recently emphasized that Aandhi deserves a re-release in modern multiplexes, asserting that it would resonate deeply with today’s audience.

Speaking to PTI, Akhtar praised the film’s subtlety and intelligence, qualities he believes are often overlooked in mainstream cinema. “It’s a really nice film. It needs to be re-released today in multiplexes. There is a certain disadvantage to films that are subtle, intelligent, and of a higher IQ. They perhaps don’t get that kind of audience in big theatres. I think a film like Aandhi, if it re-releases, will do extremely well today,” Akhtar said.

Aandhi is a poignant tale of love, politics, and personal conflict, set against the backdrop of a tumultuous relationship between a politician and her estranged husband. The film was initially controversial due to its perceived parallels with the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, but it has since been celebrated for its nuanced storytelling and stellar performances.

Gulzar’s filmography as a director includes other acclaimed works like Mausam, Parichay, Mere Apne, Khushboo, and Lekin. However, Aandhi stands out as a modern classic, blending emotional depth with social commentary. Its timeless themes of love, ambition, and sacrifice make it relevant even in contemporary times.

With the growing appreciation for classic cinema among younger audiences, Akhtar’s call for a re-release could reintroduce Aandhi to a new generation. The film’s re-release could also serve as a tribute to Gulzar’s enduring legacy in Indian cinema.

As Aandhi celebrates its golden jubilee, fans and critics alike are revisiting its brilliance, proving that great storytelling transcends time. Will the film make its way back to the big screen? Only time will tell.
