Delhi’s political scene is once again in the spotlight with fresh claims surrounding the prosecution of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the excise policy case. Reports suggest that Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena has given the green light to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to proceed with prosecuting Kejriwal. However, the AAP has vehemently denied these claims, accusing the ED of fabricating the news.
According to AAP’s Manish Sisodia, the party has not seen any official sanction from the ED and has challenged the agency to provide proof. Sisodia even suggested that the timing of these reports is an attempt to divert attention from a more pressing issue: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statements on BR Ambedkar in Parliament.
In response, Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva welcomed the alleged move, asserting that Kejriwal is a key figure in the alleged liquor scam and should be held accountable for the alleged corruption. He further accused Kejriwal of taking a commission in the scam and welcomed the investigation as an opportunity to expose what he calls the AAP’s corruption.
The excise policy case has been ongoing for over a year, with Kejriwal being arrested by the ED in March 2023 and the CBI in June. He was granted interim bail in July by the Supreme Court in the ED case and again in September in the CBI case, with both courts noting the length of his incarceration. The charges stem from allegations of irregularities in Delhi’s excise policy of 2021-22, which was scrapped amid controversy. The case was initially prompted by a recommendation from the Delhi LG in July 2022.
