LAHORE: Abdul Rehman Makki, the deputy leader of the banned terrorist organization Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), died of a heart attack on December 27, 2024, in Lahore, Pakistan. He had been undergoing treatment for diabetes at a private hospital in the city. Makki was closely associated with Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the 2008 Mumbai attacks. He served as the deputy chief of Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD), the political wing of LeT, and was involved in the organization’s foreign relations.

In 2020, Makki was convicted in Pakistan for terror financing and sentenced to six months in prison. However, this sentence was later commuted to a fine. In January 2023, the United Nations designated him as a global terrorist, imposing sanctions including an assets freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo.

Makki’s death has drawn reactions from various quarters, with some viewing it as a significant development in the fight against terrorism. His passing may have implications for the operations of LeT and its affiliates.
