Actor Ranbir Kapoor Shares His Experience Growing Up in a Film Family
Actor Ranbir Kapoor said he is aware of being a “product of nepotism” but emphasized that lineage alone never guarantees success in the film industry. Speaking at the Celebrate Cinema 2025 festival at Whistling Woods International in Mumbai, Ranbir reflected on both the privileges and responsibilities that come with being a fourth-generation member of the Kapoor family.
“I’m a product of nepotism and I got it very easy in my life, but I always had to work hard. If I don’t make a name for myself, I won’t succeed in this industry,” he stated. The 43-year-old actor also highlighted that while his family’s success is often celebrated, failures are equally important for learning and growth.
Early Exposure and Lessons From Family Legacy
Growing up, Ranbir was surrounded by music directors, lyricists, and actors who visited his home to work on films of his grandfather, Raj Kapoor. He recalled lively debates over lyrics and scenes, which shaped his understanding of cinema from a young age.
“Filmmaking is not a dictatorship; it’s a collaboration. You bring artists together and believe in something bigger,” he explained, echoing the philosophy of his great-grandfather, Prithviraj Kapoor. This early exposure taught him the importance of teamwork and inspired him to develop his own approach to acting.

Actor Ranbir Kapoor emphasized that while being born into a film family offers opportunities, it also comes with pressure to prove oneself. He shared how he had to maintain an individualistic approach and demonstrate his talent in every project.
Discussing his experiences as an assistant director on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black, Ranbir noted that observing senior actors helped him understand different ways to approach a scene. “Every filmmaker has a different way of telling a story. It’s your job as an actor to adapt and deliver,” he said. This mindset has guided him through diverse roles in films such as Wake Up Sid, Rockstar, Barfi, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani, and Animal.

Ranbir Kapoor also expressed his desire to nurture new talent. He praised film institutes for bringing together young people with energy, creativity, and dreams. “My dream is to become an acting coach someday, share my experiences, and help the next generation,” he said.
