Aero India 2025: US and Russian 5th Gen Fighters Face Off, Stealing the Show

The US F-35 and Russian Su-57 share the spotlight at Aero India 2025, marking a rare event and fueling discussions about India's future fighter acquisitions.

Breaking News

Aero India 2025, Asia’s premier air show, kicked off in Bengaluru, showcasing a historic and rare sight: the face-to-face presence of both the Russian Su-57 fifth-generation fighter jet and the American F-35 Lightning II, considered the most advanced fifth-generation fighter.

This “significant milestone” in global defense collaboration offers aviation enthusiasts a unique treat. Both aircraft are participating in the Daily Aerial Display throughout the event.

The Russian Su-57 “Felon” captivated onlookers with stunning maneuvers, including a vertical climb and full circular loop. Meanwhile, the American F-35’s presence marked the first time a 5th generation aircraft has operated on Indian soil, potentially hinting at closer defense ties between the US and India.

A photo capturing both aircraft on the tarmac went viral, celebrated as something that could “only happen in India”.

India’s interest in acquiring fifth-generation fighter aircraft has been a topic of discussion. While the U.S. hasn’t formally offered the F-35 to India, growing geopolitical alignment suggests potential for future cooperation.

However, Russia is actively seeking to sell the Su-57 to India and the UAE. The Su-57, designed to compete with the F-22 and F-35, is known for its agility and super cruise capabilities. The F-35, meanwhile, is renowned for its stealth and sensors.

India is also developing its own fifth-generation fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), with a prototype expected by 2028. The HAL AMCA is designed as a stealth, multirole combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force and Navy.

While the Mark 1 variant will feature 5th generation technologies, the Mark 2 will incorporate 6th generation upgrades.

With both the US and Russia showcasing their advanced fighter technology at Aero India 2025, India has a unique opportunity to assess its options as it moves forward with its own fighter development programs and potential acquisitions.
