Veteran Indian batsman Ajinkya Rahane has expressed his disappointment over the absence of communication from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, following his unexpected exclusion from the national Test squad. Despite a commendable performance in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia in June 2023, Rahane found himself sidelined as the selectors opted to invest in emerging talent.
Resurgence and Subsequent Exclusion
After a period away from international cricket, Rahane made a notable comeback to the Indian Test team, bolstered by an impressive stint in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Chennai Super Kings. In the WTC final, he stood out as India’s top scorer, contributing 89 and 46 runs in the two innings. These performances secured his place for the subsequent West Indies tour, where he was appointed vice-captain. However, the formation of a new selection committee under Agarkar led to a strategic shift, focusing on younger players, resulting in Rahane’s omission from the squad.
Lack of Communication
In a candid interview, Rahane revealed his frustration with the selection process, particularly the absence of dialogue regarding his exclusion. He emphasized his willingness to engage in discussions but noted that the selectors were unapproachable. “I’m not the person who will go and ask why I’m being dropped. There was no communication. Many said ‘go and talk’ but one can only talk when the other person is ready to talk. If he is not ready, there is no point fighting,” Rahane stated. He also expressed his disappointment at being dropped after the WTC final, despite his significant contributions.
Continued Passion and Domestic Performance
Despite these setbacks, Rahane remains committed to representing India. He continues to showcase his dedication through consistent performances in domestic cricket. Leading Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, Rahane has been instrumental in guiding the team to the semifinals. His recent form includes a match-winning century in the quarter-final against Haryana, underscoring his enduring prowess. “There is still fire and passion in me. I’m playing Ranji Trophy at the moment, trying to give my all to the Mumbai team. The goal is clear to make another comeback,” Rahane affirmed.
Fan Support and Future Prospects
Rahane’s exclusion has not gone unnoticed by fans and cricket analysts. Following India’s recent Test series loss, there have been widespread calls for the reinstatement of experienced players like Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara. Social media platforms have been abuzz with appeals to chief selector Ajit Agarkar, urging a reconsideration of the selection strategy. While the selection committee appears focused on nurturing young talent, Rahane’s unwavering determination and consistent domestic performances keep the door open for a potential return to the national squad.
