In a recent controversy, Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav has strongly criticized the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to remove the name of 1965 war hero, Param Vir Chakra awardee Abdul Hamid, from a primary school in Dhamupur village, Ghazipur district. The school, where Hamid once studied, had its name changed to ‘PM Shri Composite School’ during recent repainting work, sparking protests from Hamid’s family and the local community.
Describing the act as “extremely reprehensible,” Yadav stated that such actions disrespect the sacrifices of national heroes. He further commented that all that remains for “some people” is to rename “India” as “BJP,” highlighting his disapproval of the government’s renaming policies.
In response to the backlash, the local administration has restored Abdul Hamid’s name to the school’s entrance gate. The district education officer explained that the omission occurred inadvertently during repainting and assured that corrective measures have been taken.
This incident has ignited a broader debate on the preservation of historical legacies and the importance of honoring those who have contributed to the nation’s security and heritage.
