LUCKNOW: Samajwadi Party (SP) president and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday highlighted the teachings of Swami Vivekananda, emphasizing that the basic needs of people, such as food, should take precedence over religious matters. Speaking at a press conference held at the SP’s state headquarters on the occasion of Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary, celebrated as ‘National Youth Day,’ Yadav quoted the renowned philosopher and spiritual leader.

“Swami Vivekananda had once said that people need bread more than religion. In today’s times, trying to explain religious concepts to the poor is inappropriate,” Yadav said. He underlined that focusing on addressing the immediate needs of the people, like hunger and basic resources, should be a priority over religious discussions, especially for the underprivileged sections of society.

During the press conference, Yadav also responded to a question regarding the upcoming Milkipur Assembly bye-election, asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would face defeat. “Many media outlets, including newspapers and TV channels, are suggesting that the Samajwadi Party has the advantage in this election,” he added, expressing confidence in his party’s prospects.

Yadav’s remarks reflect his ongoing criticism of the current ruling government, with a focus on advocating for social welfare and addressing the pressing concerns of the common people. His comments on Vivekananda’s teachings aim to draw attention to the need for prioritizing economic and social well-being, particularly for those struggling with poverty.
