Apple Under Scrutiny: CCPA Issues Notice Over Performance Issues with iPhones After iOS 18 Update

The Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice to Apple after reports of performance issues with iPhones following the iOS 18 update, as revealed by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi.

Breaking News

Apple Inc. is facing regulatory scrutiny in India as the Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a notice over performance issues with iPhones after the iOS 18 software update. This follows multiple complaints received by the National Consumer Helpline regarding technical glitches and sluggish performance after the update.

CCPA’s Notice to Apple

Consumer Affairs Minister, Pralhad Joshi, confirmed the development on Thursday, revealing that the CCPA has asked Apple to respond to the complaints about performance problems post the iOS 18 update. The complaints have primarily been received through the National Consumer Helpline, indicating widespread dissatisfaction among users.

“The department, after examining these grievances, has issued a notice to #Apple through the CCPA, seeking a response on the matter,” Joshi shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The notice demands an explanation from Apple regarding the reported technical issues affecting iPhones after the latest software update, and it could lead to further regulatory action if the company does not provide a satisfactory response.

Regulatory Scrutiny of Apple in India

This is not the first time Apple has faced regulatory challenges in India. Last year, the Indian government issued a warning to Apple users, citing two significant software vulnerabilities that could have resulted in data theft and unauthorized access. The vulnerabilities were flagged by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), which is under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The issue reportedly affected Intel-based Mac systems, including macOS, iOS, and iPadOS devices, and was categorized as a high-severity risk.

The Centre also raised concerns about multiple vulnerabilities in Apple products, including iPhones, that could have led to spoofing or leaks of sensitive information.

Apple’s Market Challenges

The notice from CCPA comes amid growing pressure on Apple in India, which remains one of the company’s key growth markets. Apple CEO Tim Cook had earlier highlighted India’s significance in the company’s global sales success. However, recent reports suggest that Apple’s position is facing increasing competition in the country.

According to a PTI report, Apple’s iPhone sales declined by 5% globally in the final quarter of 2024, largely due to underwhelming product upgrades and the rise of Chinese rivals like Xiaomi and Vivo in the market. As a result, Apple’s market share in India dropped to 18% in 2024, further intensifying competition.

In the wake of these challenges, Apple shares have also seen a decline, falling by as much as 3% to $229.72 on the New York Stock Exchange on Monday.

Conclusion

With the CCPA’s notice over the performance issues related to the iOS 18 update, Apple’s troubles in India appear to be mounting. The regulatory scrutiny comes at a time when Apple faces stiff competition from Chinese rivals, which could impact its market share and sales performance further.
