Arvind Kejriwal Defends ‘Yamuna Poisoning’ Claim Amid Election Commission Scrutiny

Delhi's AAP leader stands by allegations of water contamination, citing public health concerns.

Breaking News

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal, leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), visited the Election Commission (EC) office in New Delhi today to address a notice regarding his recent assertion that the Haryana government is contaminating the Yamuna River water supplied to Delhi. Kejriwal will be accompanied by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann during his 11 am meeting with the EC.

Earlier this week, Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government of deliberately introducing harmful substances into the Yamuna River, resulting in elevated ammonia levels in the water supplied to Delhi. He claimed that this contamination poses significant health risks to Delhi residents. In response, the EC issued a notice demanding that Kejriwal provide evidence to substantiate his allegations.

In his 14-page reply submitted today, Kejriwal defended his remarks, stating that they were made in the public interest to highlight an urgent health crisis. He emphasized that recent water samples from the Yamuna showed dangerously high levels of ammonia, rendering the water unsafe for consumption.

The EC has expressed concerns that such statements could incite public unrest and has reminded Kejriwal of legal provisions against making unsubstantiated claims that may harm national integration and public harmony. The commission has sought detailed evidence from Kejriwal to support his allegations.

As the situation develops, Kejriwal’s meeting with the EC today is anticipated to further address these concerns and provide clarity on the matter.
