In a chilling incident from Assam’s Cachar district, a 24-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and one-year-old daughter and attempting to pass off their deaths as an accident. Rois Uddin Barbhuiya, a resident of Mohanpur in Borkhola, initially told authorities that the two victims had died when their car plunged into the Barak River on December 17, while he miraculously survived.
According to the police, Barbhuiya had informed locals about the supposed accident, claiming he had managed to escape unscathed when the car fell into the river. However, suspicion grew when his story seemed inconsistent, prompting the police to begin a thorough investigation.
The breakthrough came on December 18, when the police, alongside the state disaster response force (SDRF), retrieved Barbhuiya’s Alto-800 car from the Barak River near Raipur in Borkhola. Inside, they found the bodies of 21-year-old Heli Begum, Barbhuiya’s wife, and their one-year-old daughter.
Barbhuiya’s in-laws, who became aware of his conflicting statements to the media, filed a formal complaint, raising doubts about the legitimacy of the accident. They told the police that Barbhuiya had visited their home on the evening of December 17, but left hurriedly. They also disputed his claim of visiting a doctor, which they confirmed was false.
The police are now investigating the motive behind the killings, and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination. Further developments in the case are awaited as authorities work to uncover the full details of this tragic incident.
