India’s longest sea bridge, Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), marks its first anniversary on January 13. The 21.8 km bridge, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opened to the public the following day, has transformed transportation between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

On average, 22,689 vehicles have crossed the bridge daily, facilitating the movement of over 83 lakh vehicles in its first year. The highest single-day traffic count of 61,807 vehicles was recorded on January 14, 2024, during the bridge’s opening day, with many motorists using it for leisure rides.

The bridge has eased travel time significantly, contributing to the region’s economic growth. Of the 83,06,009 vehicles that passed through, passenger cars were the most frequent users, with 77,28,149 vehicles recorded, followed by multi-axle vehicles and buses.

Despite the bridge’s success, its daily traffic is considerably lower than the projected 89,463 vehicles. The toll, reduced by 50% to Rs.250 for passenger vehicles, still remains a concern for many commuters, with some attributing low usage to high toll rates and limited connectivity to major roads like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

To address these issues, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has initiated plans to further enhance connectivity. This includes a proposed elevated road connecting Atal Setu to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, which is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities. Additionally, an elevated road from Sewri to Worli is being constructed to link with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, offering a smooth, signal-free drive for commuters from Mumbai’s western suburbs.

The MMRDA has ensured 24/7 support on the bridge with specialized teams for traffic management, medical aid, and disruption clearance. The bridge’s successful operation has not only transformed daily commuting but also played a key role in enhancing Mumbai’s economic and social infrastructure.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis acknowledged the bridge’s impact, stating, “In just one year, Atal Setu has transformed the commuting experience for over 88 lakh vehicles, contributing significantly to the economic and social development of the region.”

The completion of this monumental infrastructure project is seen as a game-changer in Mumbai’s connectivity landscape, with further developments to streamline access and reduce travel times in the coming months.
