New Delhi: Beginning in 2025, Ayurveda Day will be observed every year on 23 September, marking a historic shift from its previous alignment with Dhanteras on the lunar calendar. This new, fixed date was established through a Gazette Notification in March 2025 by the Government of India, providing Ayurveda Day with a stable global identity and enabling broader, consistent participation both nationally and internationally.
Theme 2025: “Ayurveda for People & Planet”
The 2025 theme, “Ayurveda for People & Planet,” reflects the holistic vision of Ayurveda as a science rooted in harmony between individuals and the environment. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush, Shri Prataprao Jadhav, emphasized that Ayurveda transcends being a healthcare system; it is a comprehensive life science designed for maintaining balance with nature and addressing contemporary global challenges like lifestyle and climate-related diseases.
Growing Global Reach and Movement
According to Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Ayurveda Day has evolved into a global movement since its inception in 2016, with the first-ever all-India NSSO survey showing Ayurveda as the most commonly used system of treatment in both rural and urban settings. In 2024, Ayurveda Day celebrations included activities in around 150 countries, underlining Ayurveda’s expanding international footprint.
Significance and Planned Activities
September 23 was chosen for its symbolic alignment with the autumnal equinox, echoing Ayurvedic principles of balance. Ayurveda Day celebrations in 2025 will include awareness campaigns, youth engagement initiatives, wellness consultations, and a focus on international collaborations coordinated by the Ministry of Ayush. The event is set to position Ayurveda as a comprehensive solution for holistic health, ecological balance, stress management, and preventive wellness.
