Bangladesh Interim Government Intensifies Efforts to Extradite Sheikh Hasina from India

Home Adviser Confirms Push for Extradition Under Bilateral Treaty Amid Legal Challenges

Breaking News

Bangladesh: The interim government is ramping up efforts to bring back former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and other officials from India under the extradition treaty between the two nations. Home Adviser Lt Gen (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury confirmed the move on Wednesday, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing alleged crimes committed during Hasina’s tenure.

Sheikh Hasina, 77, has been residing in India since August 5 last year, when she fled Bangladesh following widespread student-led protests that ended her Awami League’s 16-year rule. The Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants for Hasina and several former Cabinet ministers, advisers, and military officials, accusing them of “crimes against humanity and genocide.”

The extradition process, however, faces significant legal and diplomatic hurdles. India and Bangladesh share a robust extradition treaty, but the case’s complexity and political sensitivities could delay proceedings. Legal experts suggest that India may require substantial evidence to comply with the extradition request, given the high-profile nature of the case.

Meanwhile, supporters of Sheikh Hasina argue that the charges are politically motivated, aimed at dismantling the Awami League’s influence. The situation has sparked debates about the future of Bangladesh’s political landscape and its relationship with India.

As the interim government continues its efforts, the international community watches closely, with human rights organizations urging transparency and due process in handling the case.
