In a significant development, Mumbai police have arrested a 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, in connection with the stabbing of Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan. The incident occurred on January 16, 2025, when Khan was attacked at his residence in the upscale Bandra area. Shehzad, who had entered India illegally, was working under the alias Vijay Das and was employed by a housekeeping agency. He has been charged with attempted murder and burglary.

Following the arrest, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for its handling of the situation. Raut emphasized the need for stringent measures against illegal immigrants, particularly Bangladeshis, and called for the eviction of such individuals from the country. He also demanded that a BJP delegation meet with the public to discuss the issue.

The attack on Saif Ali Khan has raised concerns about security within Mumbai and the film industry. Khan, who sustained multiple stab wounds, underwent surgery and is reported to be out of danger.
