BCCL Sets New Benchmark for Women Empowerment in Healthcare and Engineering Sectors: July 2025

Breaking News

In a landmark step towards gender equality in the public sector, Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), launched its first ever all-women general shift at Koyla Nagar Hospital in Dhanbad. This historic initiative marks a turning point in healthcare staffing in India’s coal sector, showcasing women’s leadership across key healthcare roles — from doctors and nurses to support staff.

The shift was inaugurated by Shri Samiran Dutta, Chairman-cum-Managing Director of BCCL, in the presence of BCCL Directors and senior officers. The event also witnessed participation from Dr. Poonam Dubey, Chief of Medical Services, BCCL, and Dr. Vandana Thakur, Chief Medical Officer, Central Hospital Dhanbad — both of whom play pivotal roles in steering BCCL’s healthcare initiatives.

CMD Shri Dutta, in his remarks, emphasized, “This is not just about representation — it is about transformation. Our women staff are not only supporting operations but are also redefining leadership in healthcare delivery within BCCL.”

This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Coal’s broader vision of inclusive, equitable, and quality-driven service across the country. It follows the recent dual ISO certification awarded to Central Hospital Dhanbad (CHD):

  • ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems

  • ISO 45001:2018 for Occupational Health and Safety

Awarded by UKAF CERT Limited, United Kingdom, this recognition places CHD among the few public sector hospitals in India recognized for both quality and safety standards.

Women Break Barriers in Technical Operations with LED & Solar Repair Centre

Parallel to advancements in healthcare, BCCL also inaugurated its first women-operated centralised technical repair centre for LED and solar energy equipment at Koyla Nagar, Dhanbad. This initiative places women in charge of a domain historically dominated by male personnel — electrical maintenance and energy systems.

The centre was also launched by CMD Shri Samiran Dutta, with senior officials in attendance. He highlighted the core message behind the initiative: “True empowerment means placing trust in women’s technical capabilities. From repairing solar lights to complex LED systems, our women technicians are proving their mettle in the engineering space.”

The unit is managed by seven trained female employees from BCCL’s Electrical and Mechanical (E&M) department. Under the guidance of the workshop in-charge, the team will handle a wide range of maintenance tasks — from LED bulbs to solar panel lighting units and other essential equipment used in mining operations.

An Integrated Approach to Inclusive Growth by BCCL

These initiatives — in healthcare and technical services — form part of the company’s broader mission to drive inclusive growth, institutional excellence, and gender parity. Through such people-first strategies, BCCL is not only supporting national energy infrastructure but also reshaping the public sector workplace for the 21st century.
