The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has emerged victorious in all four constituencies in the recent West Bengal bypolls held on July 10, delivering a significant political blow to the BJP. With these wins, the ruling party’s strength in the state assembly has risen from 215 to 229 seats, while the BJP’s count has dropped from 77 to 63.

Key wins include Krishna Kalyani in Raiganj, who defeated BJP’s Manas Kumar Ghosh by 50,007 votes, and Dr. Mukut Mani Adhikari in Ranaghat-Dakshin, securing a margin of 39,048 votes over the BJP’s Manoj Kumar Biswas. Both candidates had previously contested as BJP representatives in 2021 but switched allegiance to the TMC.

In Bagda, TMC’s Madhuparna Thakur triumphed by 33,455 votes, defeating BJP’s Binay Kumar Biswas. Similarly, Supti Pandey claimed a victory in Maniktala, winning by over 62,000 votes against BJP’s Kalyan Chaubey. Notably, this seat was necessitated by the demise of Sadhan Pandey, and his widow, Supti Pandey, represented the TMC.

These results highlight TMC’s continued dominance, particularly in its stronghold areas, while the BJP faces challenges in retaining its voter base, even in constituencies like Raiganj and Ranaghat-Dakshin, where it had earlier been ahead during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

Reacting to the results, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh stated, “The people of Bengal have once again placed their trust in Mamata Banerjee’s leadership. This is a clear rejection of the divisive politics of the BJP.” On the other hand, BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar acknowledged the setback, saying, “We will introspect and come back stronger.”

The bypolls, marked by high voter turnout, come amid an atmosphere of political tension in the state, with issues such as unemployment and law and order taking center stage. These victories bolster the TMC ahead of upcoming challenges, including the Lok Sabha elections.
