A tragic incident in Bengaluru has taken a disturbing turn as the boyfriend of a 21-year-old woman, whose body was found in a lake, has alleged that her death was a case of ‘honour’ killing. The police are investigating the matter to determine whether it was an accident or a deliberate act of violence.
The body of the woman, identified as R. Sahana, was discovered in a lake on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Thursday. Authorities learned that Sahana lived in Harohalli, near Hosur. Her father, Ramamurthy, initially filed a police complaint, explaining that the two-wheeler he was riding with his daughter on Tuesday had lost control and crashed into the lake, which led to her drowning. He claimed that Sahana, who could not swim, died because she was unable to escape the water.
However, Sahana’s boyfriend, Nitin, has cast doubt on this account, asserting that the young woman’s death was not an accident but a targeted act of ‘honour’ killing by her father. Nitin suggested that Ramamurthy had deliberately pushed his daughter into the lake. He further claimed that on Sunday night, Sahana’s father had summoned him to a friend’s house in Hebbagodi, where he physically assaulted her in front of Nitin. Despite the attack, Sahana reportedly remained determined to marry Nitin.
In response to these claims, Ramamurthy has admitted to being upset upon discovering his daughter’s relationship with Nitin but firmly denied the allegations of foul play. During police interrogation, he maintained that his daughter’s death was a tragic accident and that he failed to save her despite knowing how to swim. He added that he had lost control of the vehicle because he “dozed off” while riding.
The police have registered a case for causing death by negligence and are investigating the conflicting statements. Investigators are working to determine whether this was a tragic accident or if there is truth to the allegations of an honour killing.
As the investigation continues, the local community remains in shock, grappling with the chilling possibility that a young woman’s life may have been cut short due to family opposition to her relationship. The case highlights the ongoing challenges women face in certain parts of society, where relationships and personal choices continue to be heavily influenced by family pressure and traditional beliefs.
Authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could help clarify the circumstances surrounding Sahana’s death.
