New Delhi: Dr. Bibek Debroy, a prominent economist and chairperson of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, has passed away at the age of 69 in New Delhi. Known for his expertise in economics, policy, and translation of Indian epics, Debroy’s passing marks a significant loss to India’s intellectual community.
Debroy was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences due to an intestinal obstruction and passed away early Friday. His vast contributions include leading the Railways Ministry’s committee on reforms and serving as a founding member of the NITI Aayog from 2015 until 2019. A Padma Shri awardee, he also held the chancellorship of the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics and produced a series of acclaimed works, including a 10-volume English translation of the Mahabharata, making ancient texts accessible to modern readers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a heartfelt message, praised Debroy as a “towering scholar” with an “indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape,” recognizing his profound engagement across fields like economics, history, culture, and spirituality. PM Modi also remembered Debroy’s contributions to academia and his role in popularizing Indian cultural heritage through accessible translations.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also expressed condolences, describing Debroy as a “thought-provoking commentator” whose ability to explain complex economic issues with clarity made him a unique voice in Indian media and policy discussions.
