MUMBAI: Acclaimed filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane is set to return to Netflix with “Black Warrant,” a gripping prison drama series premiering on January 10, 2025.

Inspired by the book “Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer” by former Tihar Jail superintendent Sunil Gupta and journalist-author Sunetra Choudhury, the series offers an unfiltered glimpse into the complexities of prison life.

Set in the 1980s, “Black Warrant” follows rookie jailer Sunil Kumar Gupta as he navigates the challenges of Tihar Jail, Asia’s largest prison, confronting notorious criminals and systemic issues that test his moral compass.

The series marks the acting debut of Zahan Kapoor, grandson of the legendary Shashi Kapoor, portraying Sunil Kumar Gupta. The ensemble cast includes Rahul Bhat, Paramvir Singh Cheema, Anurag Thakur, and Sidhant Gupta in pivotal roles.

Co-created and showrun by Vikramaditya Motwane and Satyanshu Singh, the series is co-directed by Ambiecka Pandit, Arkesh Ajay, and Rohin Raveendran Nair. Motwane, known for his work on “Sacred Games,” expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Black Warrant is a book that is raw, intense, and authentic and immediately demands to be brought to life.”

“Black Warrant” is produced by Applause Entertainment in association with Andolan Production and Confluence Media. The series is poised to be a significant addition to Netflix’s 2025 lineup, offering viewers a compelling narrative set against the backdrop of one of India’s most notorious prisons.
