Mumbai: As thousands gathered at Chaityabhoomi to honor Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on his death anniversary, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) implemented extensive arrangements to ensure visitor comfort and safety. Observed as Mahaparinirvan Din, December 6 marks the day the chief architect of the Indian Constitution passed away in 1956.
Key Facilities and Arrangements
To manage the crowd at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar, the BMC provided temporary shelters covering 1 lakh square feet, water-resistant tents, and dust-free pathways. The BMC installed six RO water plants, 530 taps, and 70 water tankers, and distributed bottled water and biscuits.
Women-specific amenities included four pink toilets and Hirkani Kakshas—dedicated spaces for mothers to feed their children. The BMC arranged mobile charging points, temporary showers, and additional toilets at key locations like Dadar Railway Station, Rajgruha, and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
Security and Emergency Measures
The BMC reinforced security with CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and bag scanners at Chaityabhoomi and Shivaji Park. Emergency preparedness included two fire engines, an ICU ambulance, and four rescue boats, alongside health posts at 11 strategic locations.
Technology and Public Engagement
Visitors could watch the tribute program via live telecasts on large screens and platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube. Book stalls and information kiosks were set up to engage the crowd further.
Sanitation Efforts
The BMC deployed 220 sanitation workers per shift to maintain cleanliness at Shivaji Park and surrounding areas.
The BMC’s extensive planning reflects its commitment to honoring Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy while ensuring the well-being of his followers during this significant occasion.
