A shocking discovery in the Rajya Sabha during an anti-sabotage check has sparked a political controversy. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced that a bundle of Rs.500 currency notes was found at seat number 222, assigned to Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. While the notes remain unclaimed, the matter has been handed over for investigation.

Chairman Dhankhar emphasized the need for transparency, stating, “This is a routine anti-sabotage check. It was my duty to inform the House.” He noted that the notes appeared to total Rs.50,000 but added it was unclear if they were genuine or counterfeit.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi, addressing the media, dismissed any involvement, calling the incident “bizarre.” He recounted his brief presence in Parliament on the day in question, stating, “I was inside the House for just three minutes. This raises serious concerns about security.” Singhvi further suggested that MPs may need lockable seats to prevent such incidents.

The incident led to heated exchanges in Parliament. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the Chairman for naming Singhvi before the investigation concluded, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju called for a thorough probe, stating that carrying cash in the House was unacceptable.

Dhankhar remarked humorously, “Does it reflect the state of the economy that people can afford to forget such amounts?” Opposition members demanded accountability, while treasury benches supported an extensive investigation.

As the inquiry unfolds, the incident has highlighted security lapses and triggered debates on parliamentary conduct. Further updates are awaited.
