The Sealdah Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate court has granted bail to Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and Abhijit Mondol, the former officer-in-charge of Tala police station. The bail was issued after the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) failed to submit a chargesheet within the mandatory 90-day period. Both were implicated in the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee at the hospital on August 9, a case that sparked nationwide outrage.
The court set a bail bond of ₹2,000 for each and instructed them to cooperate with the CBI’s ongoing investigation. However, Ghosh remains in custody due to his involvement in a separate case of financial irregularities at the hospital.
The CBI alleged that Ghosh attempted to suppress evidence and pass off the incident as a suicide, while Mondol faced accusations of delaying the filing of a First Information Report (FIR). Their involvement came under scrutiny following the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, who was charged with the heinous crime.
Despite the bail, the investigation continues, with the CBI analyzing forensic data and questioning witnesses. The case highlights lapses in administrative and law enforcement responses, further intensifying public scrutiny of the justice process.
