NEW DELHI: On November 26, 2024, President Droupadi Murmu led the nation in celebrating 75 years of the adoption of India’s Constitution. Speaking from the Central Hall of Parliament, she highlighted the profound significance of this milestone, emphasizing how the Constitution has shaped India into a robust democratic republic. The celebrations, part of the annual Constitution Day observance, honored the visionary work of the Constituent Assembly, which adopted the document in 1949, and laid the foundation for India’s future as a sovereign republic.
In her address, President Murmu underscored that the Constitution is the cornerstone of India’s democracy, ensuring justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity for all citizens. Reflecting on the journey since independence, she noted that the Constitution’s ideals of equality and justice continue to guide India’s progress, especially in the realms of social justice and inclusive development. She praised the role of citizens, the executive, legislature, and judiciary in preserving and upholding these constitutional values, emphasizing the importance of collective participation in nation-building.
The President also acknowledged the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the lives of marginalized communities and noted significant infrastructure development across India. With a focus on welfare schemes, such as housing for the poor and the creation of world-class infrastructure, she highlighted how these initiatives are grounded in constitutional principles that aim to uplift every section of society.
As India nears the 75th anniversary of becoming a republic in January 2025, President Murmu called upon citizens to continue fostering the constitutional ideals in their daily lives. She urged them to uphold the Fundamental Duties outlined in the Constitution, working towards the goal of a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) by 2047.
In his message, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings to the nation on this momentous occasion, reaffirming India’s commitment to the constitutional values of equality and fraternity as it continues to grow as a global leader.
