A 26-year-old man from Chennai tragically died by suicide after being reprimanded by his family for spending Rs.30,000, saved for his mother’s cancer treatment, on an online rummy game. The incident highlights the growing concern over online gaming addiction and its devastating consequences.

The deceased, a resident of Chinnamalai’s Second Street, had been working intermittently in the food business. He had lost his father eight years ago and lived with his cancer-stricken mother and brother. During the Covid-19 pandemic, he became addicted to online gaming, a habit that spiraled into financial and personal troubles.

On Friday, after being scolded by his mother and brother for misusing the treatment funds, he went missing. His family searched for him throughout the night but could not reach him as his phone was switched off. Tragically, at 3:30 am on Saturday, his body was discovered on the terrace of their home. He had used a TV cable wire to take his own life.

Upon being alerted, Kottupuram police arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and launched an investigation into the incident.
