Chennai Metro CCTV Expansion Begins Across Phase I Stations
Chennai Metro CCTV network is getting a major upgrade as Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) starts work to enhance security and monitoring across its 54-km Phase I network. The initiative includes both new camera installations and the replacement of older units to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality surveillance across key metro stations.
Currently, around 3,500 CCTV cameras monitor the two main corridors Washermenpet to Chennai Airport and Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount along with the Phase I Extension line from Washermenpet to Wimco Nagar. However, officials have noted that several critical areas, especially parking lots and corners of platforms, remain outside camera coverage.
To close these gaps, CMRL has planned a 25% increase in CCTV cameras, prioritizing 14 busy metro stations. These include Chennai Airport, Guindy, High Court, Shenoy Nagar, Thirumangalam, Vadapalani, Koyambedu, Ekkatuthangal, Alandur, CMBT, Ashok Nagar, and Chennai Central stations that see some of the highest passenger movement each day.
Chennai Metro CCTV- Improving Safety and Reducing Blind Spots
CMRL officials explained that the tender process took longer than expected due to cost revisions and detailed documentation, which delayed implementation. Despite this, survey and cable-laying work has now begun, with full installation expected to be completed by December.
According to officials, the main goal of the Chennai Metro CCTV expansion is to enhance passenger safety, particularly for women and senior citizens. There have been past incidents where commuters, especially women, reported being followed in long underground corridors or encountering poorly lit and unsupervised areas. These concerns prompted CMRL to take stronger steps toward surveillance upgrades.
A source close to the project shared that the first priority is to install cameras in “blind spots” where existing coverage is weak or absent. “It’s essential that every corner of the station from ticket counters to staircases and parking areas is under surveillance. This will discourage antisocial behavior and make commuters feel more secure,” the source added.
Addressing Security in Parking Spaces
Apart from platform and corridor coverage, CMRL’s new CCTV plan gives equal importance to parking zones areas that have often been vulnerable to petty crimes. Metro staff have reported recurring incidents of fuel theft, helmet snatching, vehicle damage, and even passengers leaving parking areas without paying.
With better CCTV coverage, these problems can be significantly reduced. Real-time footage will also help in identifying culprits quickly and resolving disputes between passengers and parking management. The inclusion of high-definition and night-vision cameras will further improve visibility and evidence quality, even in dimly lit spaces.
Ensuring Reliability and Clarity
Many existing cameras are being replaced to eliminate technical glitches and poor video clarity. The new equipment is expected to provide better resolution and wider coverage, allowing control room operators to monitor live feeds more effectively.

CMRL officials also plan to integrate these upgraded systems into a centralized monitoring network, which will help security staff respond faster to incidents across multiple stations. Continuous footage backups will be maintained to aid investigations whenever required. Also Read: Chennai Sangamam 2026 Invites Creative Logo Designs for Grand Cultural Festival
Conclusion
The Chennai Metro CCTV expansion marks a significant step toward building a safer and smarter metro experience for Chennai’s commuters. Once completed by December, passengers can expect stronger surveillance across all major stations, improved security in parking areas, and a more reliable monitoring system overall.
This initiative reflects CMRL’s growing focus on safety, ensuring that every journey on the Chennai Metro is secure, comfortable, and well-protected.
