The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), responsible for securing the Parliament House Complex, has denied any security lapse during the December 19 scuffle between MPs from the NDA and INDIA bloc. Addressing the incident, CISF Deputy Inspector General (Operations) Shrikant Kishore stated there was no breach of security protocols, emphasizing that no weapons were permitted during the altercation.
“The force has not been involved in any inquiry related to the incident,” Kishore said in a press briefing, adding that the CISF would refrain from commenting further amid the ongoing allegations. He also noted that the force would not engage with the claims and counterclaims made by the parliamentarians involved.
What Happened on December 19?
On December 19, Rahul Gandhi and other MPs from the INDIA alliance staged protests inside Parliament, calling for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to apologize for his controversial remarks about Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar. During a confrontation between the protesting MPs and NDA lawmakers, BJP MPs Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput sustained head injuries.
The BJP accused Gandhi of physically pushing the two MPs, causing them to fall. Sarangi, the 70-year-old Member of Parliament from Balasore, Odisha, alleged that Gandhi shoved Rajput, leading to both MPs falling and sustaining injuries. Sarangi suffered a forehead injury, while Rajput hurt his knee. Both MPs were initially admitted to the ICU at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital but have since been discharged.
The Congress party strongly rejected the BJP’s allegations, countering that it was the BJP MPs who had pushed Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge and physically manhandled Rahul Gandhi during the confrontation.
Following the incident, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Rahul Gandhi based on a complaint from the BJP, accusing him of physical assault and incitement.
In a press conference, Gandhi responded to the incident, criticizing the government for attempting to divert attention from what he described as the “main issue” – the legal troubles facing businessman Adani, a close associate of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Gandhi argued that the government was attempting to suppress discussion on this matter.
The political drama continues to unfold as both sides maintain their accusations, with the Parliament scuffle remaining a contentious issue.
