Congress Criticizes PM Modi for Not Visiting Violence-Affected Manipur

On the first anniversary of the 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' the Congress party has intensified its criticism of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur amid ongoing ethnic violence.

Breaking News

NEW DELHI: The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his continued absence from violence-stricken Manipur. Despite finding time to travel globally, the Prime Minister has not deemed it necessary to visit the distressed people of the northeastern state, the party alleges.

This criticism coincides with the first anniversary of the ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,’ initiated by Rahul Gandhi in Manipur on January 14, 2024. The yatra aimed to spotlight issues such as unemployment, price rise, and social justice.

Manipur has been embroiled in ethnic violence since May 2023, primarily between the Meitei majority and the Kuki-Zo minority communities. The conflict has resulted in over 250 deaths and displaced at least 60,000 people.

The Congress has repeatedly urged Prime Minister Modi to visit the violence-hit state, stressing that such a gesture would help restore peace and normalcy. However, the Prime Minister has yet to make a visit, leading to increased criticism from opposition parties.

In response to the ongoing violence, the Indian government has deployed tens of thousands of security forces to the region. Despite these efforts, the situation remains volatile, with recent reports indicating that fighters from the Myanmar civil war have crossed into Manipur, exacerbating the conflict.

The Congress party continues to question the Prime Minister’s priorities, accusing him of neglecting domestic crises in favor of international engagements. As the situation in Manipur persists, calls for the Prime Minister’s intervention are growing louder.
