The Congress party has filed a privilege motion against two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra, following derogatory remarks they made about Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticized the move, stating, “We moved a privilege motion against BJP MPs Nishikant Dubey and Sambit Patra. We sought a ruling from the Speaker, but the Question Hour was adjourned. The person against whom the motion was filed was allowed to speak in Parliament again.” He accused the BJP of orchestrating a conspiracy to prevent the functioning of Parliament, with an alleged agenda to evade questions related to the Adani issue.
Congress general secretary KC Venugopal also condemned the BJP’s actions, accusing the government of trying to suppress the opposition. He remarked, “We are witnessing a bulldozing attitude from the government to suppress the opposition’s efforts. A derogatory remark was made against the leader of opposition, and the Speaker is under total pressure from the government.”
The controversy erupted when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey questioned Rahul Gandhi’s connections to various individuals during his visits to the U.S. Dubey specifically inquired about Gandhi’s ties to Salil Shetty of the Open Society Foundation, who participated in the Bharat Jodo Movement, and raised concerns over his meetings with U.S. politicians and foreign figures he claimed were linked to separatist movements.
Meanwhile, Sambit Patra, speaking at a press conference, accused Gandhi of being part of a “dangerous triangle” aimed at destabilizing India, involving foreign figures like George Soros and organizations such as OCCRP. He controversially labeled Rahul Gandhi as a “traitor of the highest order.”
The Congress, however, remains firm in its stance, asserting that such attacks are part of a larger effort to undermine opposition leaders.
