In a scholarly convocation address at IIT Roorkee, Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh hailed the institute—founded in 1847 as Asia’s first engineering college—as a role model in research, innovation, and societal engagement. He highlighted the illustrious history of the institution, previously known as the University of Roorkee, and its transformation into an IIT in 2001, underscoring its continuous legacy of technological excellence and nation-building.

Academic Eminence and Recent Rankings

IIT Roorkee, originally set up to train engineers for major infrastructure projects, has distinguished itself across generations as a cradle of technical expertise. Dr. Singh emphasized its robust academic foundations and geographic advantage in the Himalayas, while noting the institute’s high standing in the latest National Institutional Framework (NIF) ratings, securing the No. 6 spot in India.

He pointed out that 50% of these ventures now emerge from smaller towns, showcasing the decentralization of innovation and opportunities far beyond metropolitan areas.

Future Prospects: Biotechnology, Space, and Industry Linkages

Dr. Singh predicted that the next industrial revolution will be biotechnology-driven and encouraged IIT Roorkee to diversify into burgeoning domains such as biotech, space, nuclear energy, and Himalayan resources. He highlighted government initiatives like the Purple Revolution in lavender cultivation and new policies under Bio-E³, urging stronger industry linkages and early adoption of a startup mindset for graduates.

Celebrating Leadership and Institutional Achievements

Dr. Singh congratulated Director Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Deputy Director Prof. U.P. Singh, and faculty for steering the institute towards research and academic distinction. He cited recognitions such as the “Most Innovative Institute” and the “Gatishakti Achiever Award for Excellence of Women in STEM,” reflecting Roorkee’s commitment to gender inclusion and innovation.
