KALYAN: A couple has been arrested in Kalyan, Maharashtra, for the kidnapping and murder of a 12-year-old girl. Vishal Gawli, 35, and his wife Sakshi Gawli, 25, have been remanded in police custody until January 2, 2025, as the investigation into the crime continues.
The young girl, a resident of Kolsewadi locality in Kalyan, was last seen on Monday afternoon while playing near her home. Her body was discovered the next day near Bhiwandi, about 8 kilometers from her house. Her parents reported her missing and launched a search, which led to the tragic discovery.
Vishal Gawli was arrested on Wednesday in Shegaon, Buldhana district, after authorities located him in a salon where he had attempted to alter his appearance by shaving his beard. He was taken into custody, while Sakshi Gawli was arrested at their residence in Kalyan.
The couple is facing charges of kidnapping and murder, with authorities also investigating the possibility of sexual assault. The police have seized an autorickshaw that is believed to have been used in the crime.
The case has sparked outrage in the local community, and there have been calls for the strictest punishment for the accused. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are given the harshest possible sentence, including the death penalty.
