Filmmaker David Ayer, best known for directing Suicide Squad, has decided to step back from social media after receiving threats and negative comments from a section of DCEU (DC Extended Universe) fans. The controversy arose after Ayer publicly expressed his excitement for James Gunn’s upcoming reboot of Superman, which has sparked a divide within the fan community.
Some fans loyal to the previous DCEU continuity did not receive Ayer’s support for Gunn’s Superman, which will introduce David Corenswet as Superman, well.Gunn’s film marks a new direction for the DC Universe, which has stirred anger among those who favored the portrayal of Superman by Henry Cavill and the creative vision of Zack Snyder. As the trailer for the new Superman film was about to drop, Ayer urged fans in a social media post to avoid campaigning for the release of his own Suicide Squad cut and to support Gunn’s project instead.
However, intense backlash followed Ayer’s message. Fans of the original DCEU accused him of betraying the fandom and labeled him a “sellout.” In response to the vitriol, Ayer took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his disappointment. He shared a heartfelt message, reflecting on his childhood struggles and how comic books, particularly Superman, helped him find solace. He emphasized that his excitement for Gunn’s film stems from a personal need for hope and optimism, something he believes the new Superman film embodies.
Ayer concluded his message by announcing that he was stepping away from the online turmoil, stating, “I’m just lost at this point,” and expressing his intent to take a break from the social media heat.
James Gunn’s Superman film, set for release on July 11, 2025, will feature a new cast alongside Corenswet, including Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, and Isabela Merced. The film represents a fresh start for the DC Universe, with Gunn at the helm, following the departure of previous iterations of the iconic superhero.
