New Delhi: In response to worsening air quality, Delhi has activated Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), aimed at controlling pollution sources as the capital faces a recurring winter air crisis. The move came as the Air Quality Index (AQI) slipped into the ‘poor’ category, with readings consistently above 200 in the last few days. On Tuesday, Delhi’s AQI hit 207, and the forecast indicates further deterioration as winter approaches, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Key actions under GRAP Stage 1 focus on curbing dust from construction sites, monitoring emissions from vehicles, and enforcing bans on waste burning. The authorities are also deploying more water sprinklers and mechanized road sweepers to reduce dust on streets. Industrial emissions are under stricter scrutiny, with restrictions on coal-fired kilns and diesel generators. Additionally, measures such as unified commuting for office employees are being promoted to reduce vehicular traffic.
Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai emphasized the importance of public cooperation, stating, “Every citizen’s effort counts in battling this annual crisis. We urge people to follow the guidelines and avoid using firecrackers during festivals.” He further added that industries failing to adhere to the new restrictions would face penalties, stressing that the health of Delhi’s residents cannot be compromised.
While the measures are stringent, experts worry about their efficacy in the long term. Environmentalist Sunita Narain pointed out, “Stage 1 is important, but what we need is a year-round strategy focusing on sustainable urban planning, which includes better public transport and green cover expansion.”
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast cooler days ahead, with increased humidity likely worsening the smog, a perennial problem in the winter months. Residents are being advised to monitor air quality through apps like Green Delhi and SAMEER to stay informed and report violations.
