New Delhi continues to endure harsh winter conditions as dense fog and a cold wave grip the national capital. Residents woke up to freezing temperatures and low visibility on New Year’s Eve, with the chill expected to persist into the start of 2025.
Cold Wave Persists
After a steep drop in night temperatures, Delhi’s weather remained severe, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting cloudy skies for December 31. The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 10.05°C, while the maximum may reach 20.84°C.
The IMD forecasts little relief from the cold wave as the New Year begins. On January 1, Delhi is likely to experience a minimum temperature of 13.57°C and a maximum of 22.18°C. However, a gradual rise in temperatures is anticipated from the second week of January.
Fog and Visibility Challenges
Dense fog continues to disrupt visibility across Northwest India, with conditions expected to persist for the next two days. Improvements are likely from January 3, bringing some respite to commuters battling poor visibility and low daytime temperatures.
Air Quality Worsens
After temporary relief due to recent rains, Delhi’s air quality has deteriorated once again. The Air Quality Index (AQI) worsened to the ‘poor’ category on December 31, averaging 236 at 8 a.m., as reported by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). This marked a noticeable spike compared to earlier in the week.
Outlook for Delhiites
As residents celebrate the New Year amid festive zeal, they must brace for ongoing challenges posed by the cold wave and pollution. While a slight improvement in weather conditions is on the horizon, the battle against winter’s dual assault of chilling temperatures and poor air quality will likely persist for several more days.
