Maharashtra’s political landscape witnessed a significant shift as Devendra Fadnavis took oath as Chief Minister for the third time, pledging a stable government and a governance style focused on “change, not revenge.” Addressing the media on Thursday, Fadnavis assured citizens of a transparent and development-oriented administration under the BJP-led alliance.
A Turnaround in Maharashtra Politics
The state has seen its fair share of political turbulence since 2019. The BJP-Shiv Sena alliance collapsed post-assembly elections, leading to the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress. This government was overturned in 2022 after Eknath Shinde’s rebellion split the Shiv Sena. Shinde aligned with the BJP and served as CM. Following the recent state elections, Fadnavis has now reclaimed leadership.
Reflecting on the past, Fadnavis stated, “From 2019 to mid-2022, we witnessed significant political upheavals. We hope such surprises are behind us.” Emphasizing his vision, he said, “This government will focus on politics of change and growth rather than revenge.”
Cabinet Priorities and Key Portfolios
The newly sworn-in CM, along with deputy CMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, held the first cabinet meeting on Thursday. Fadnavis assured strategic allocation of key portfolios and dismissed rumors of discord, emphasizing Shinde’s commitment to unified governance.
Development Initiatives
Fadnavis highlighted the government’s commitment to fulfilling its pre-poll promises, including enhancing the Ladki Bahin Yojana, which offers financial support to women. He announced plans to raise the scheme’s monthly stipend from ₹1,500 to ₹2,100 for eligible beneficiaries.
Legislative Agenda
The Maharashtra government will convene a three-day special assembly session starting December 7 in Mumbai to elect a new Speaker. Additionally, Fadnavis announced plans to expand the cabinet before the winter session of the state legislature in Nagpur later this month.
With a clear focus on stability and progress, Fadnavis aims to steer Maharashtra toward a transformative phase in governance.
