Mumbai: Devendra Fadnavis has been unanimously elected as the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislative party, clearing the way for his return as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister. The announcement was made by BJP central observer Vijay Rupani during the legislative party meeting, where no other names were proposed for the position.
Fadnavis’s nomination was formally moved by former BJP state president Chandrakant Patil and seconded by senior leader Pankaja Munde. “As there are no other proposals, I declare Devendra Fadnavis as the unopposed leader of the legislative party,” said Rupani during the meeting.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted the importance of this decision, describing the Maharashtra mandate as a step toward a “Vikasit Bharat” (Developed India). She expressed confidence in the “double-engine” governance model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Fadnavis, promising transformative growth for the state. “The promises made in our manifesto will be fulfilled with vigor,” Sitharaman assured.
Fadnavis, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, is scheduled to meet Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan later in the day to formally stake claim to form the government. This marks Fadnavis’s return to Maharashtra’s top office, reaffirming his leadership credentials within the state BJP and his pivotal role in Maharashtra’s development trajectory.
As Fadnavis prepares to take the oath, his leadership is expected to focus on addressing the state’s pressing challenges while aligning with the BJP’s vision for rapid growth and progress.
