New Delhi: The 11th Convocation Ceremony of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences (ABVIMS) and Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RMLH) was held on September 20, 2025. Dr Abhijat Chandrakant Sheth, Chairman of the National Medical Commission (NMC), presided over the occasion held in New Delhi. Notable dignitaries present included Dr Sunita Sharma, Director General of Health Services (DGHS), and Dr Vinod Kotwal, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Commitment to Increasing Medical Workforce
In his address, Dr. Sheth congratulated the graduating students, their families, and faculty, commending them for their dedication. He emphasized the government’s promise to increase doctor numbers uniformly nationwide, to meet the World Health Organization’s recommended doctor-patient ratio of 1:1000. Dr Sheth also highlighted efforts to balance undergraduate to postgraduate doctor ratios to 1:1, aiming to enhance India’s healthcare quality to global standards.
Educational Innovations in Medical Training
Dr. Sheth spoke about innovative educational reforms led by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) and the NMC, which integrate skill-based training and virtual learning alongside traditional physical education to fulfill competency-based medical education goals. He encouraged graduates to remain dedicated to lifelong learning, self-care, and resilience.
Honors and Responsibilities Highlighted by Officials
Dr Vinod Kotwal praised the students for their hard work, emphasizing that their education marks the beginning of a lifelong commitment to nation’s health. She lauded ABVIMS for its recent NABH accreditation, reflecting its commitment to quality, safety, and patient-centric care. Dr Kotwal urged the new doctors to pursue medicine with integrity, compassion, and respect, emphasizing the profession’s human aspect beyond disease treatment.
Dr Sunita Sharma addressed graduates reminding them their degrees represent responsibility towards healing, leadership, and service. She underscored the profession’s noble calling, built on compassion and commitment to human life, advising all to uphold empathy, evidence, and excellence.
Graduation and Institutional Overview: Convocation Ceremony
During the ceremony, 250 postgraduate and DM students and the first batch of 100 MBBS students were awarded degrees. The annual report of ABVIMS (Samhita) was also released, highlighting the institution’s academic progress and service.
ABVIMS was established in 1932 as Willingdon Nursing Home and has evolved into a premier 1,532-bed tertiary care hospital offering comprehensive specialty and super-specialty services. Renamed in 2019, the institute admits 100 MBBS students annually along with 203 postgraduate and 48 DM/MCh seats. It handles nearly 12 lakh outpatients and 60,000 inpatients annually, offering 24/7 emergency services. Dr RMLH serves wide-ranging patients including CGHS beneficiaries, MPs, Ministers, Judges, and VVIP dignitaries.
The convocation ceremony was attended by faculty, ministry officials, and the proud families of the graduates, marking a significant milestone in Indian medical education and healthcare.
