DRI Seizes 119.4 kg of Alprazolam Worth Rs 23.88 Crore in Multi-City Operation in Andhra Pradesh; Eight Arrested

Breaking News

Andhra Pradesh/Hyderabad: In a meticulously coordinated multi-city operation, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials from Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Kakinada successfully busted a clandestine manufacturing facility in Atchuthapuram, Anakapalli District, Andhra Pradesh, seizing 119.4 kg of Alprazolam in lumpy form valued around ₹23.88 crore in the illicit market. Alongside, they recovered 87.8 kg of in-process material and arrested eight individuals involved in the manufacturing and distribution network.

Details of the Operation

Following specific intelligence inputs about illegal manufacturing of Alprazolam—a psychotropic substance governed by the NDPS Act, 1985—the DRI planned and executed a swift raid dismantling the entire operation under a single sweep.

Seized materials and equipment include:

  • 119.4 kg Alprazolam (lumpy form)

  • 87.8 kg in-process material

  • RAW materials: 3,600 litres (liquid form) and 311.6 kg (solid form) of illegally procured chemicals

  • Manufacturing equipment: two reactors, one centrifuge, and one drier

  • Several incriminating documents related to the operation

Arrests and Syndicate Background

All eight people arrested included the mastermind, chemists, financiers, and buyers, who were directly involved in the illegal manufacturing and distribution of Alprazolam. Most of the accused have prior records including narcotics cases, murder, cyber-crimes, and economic offences, reflecting a deep-rooted and organized criminal syndicate.

Initial interrogation revealed:

  • The syndicate members conspired to engage in narcotic manufacturing, forming networks during their jail terms.

  • Their Alprazolam production was allegedly meant for transport to Telangana, where the drug was intended to adulterate Toddy, a local alcoholic beverage.

Significance of the Bust

Alprazolam, commonly prescribed for anxiety and panic disorders, is a potent psychotropic substance that can cause significant harm if diverted illegally. This bust highlights the DRI’s continued vigilance against narcotic drug manufacture and trafficking, especially when linked to broader criminal activities and public health risks.

Conclusion

The operation in Atchuthapuram exemplifies the capacity of Indian law enforcement agencies to dismantle sophisticated and entrenched narcotics manufacturing syndicates. The successful seizure, arrests, and further investigations will serve as a deterrent against similar illicit activities and reinforce the government’s commitment to narcotics control and public safety.
