E20 Petrol: A Cleaner Fuel That Keeps Efficiency and Improves Engine Health, Confirms Ministry

What Is E20 Petrol and Why It Matters
E20 is part of India’s larger energy roadmap — a shift toward reducing dependency on fossil fuels and cutting carbon emissions. Ethanol, derived from sugarcane, rice, or maize, is a renewable biofuel. Mixing it with petrol helps lower the overall carbon footprint and supports farmers by increasing demand for agricultural produce.
Currently, most Indian vehicles run on E10 fuel, which contains 10% ethanol. The E20 blend marks the next major step, with the government aiming for a nationwide rollout by 2025.
The Fuel Efficiency Myth
One of the most common concerns among motorists is mileage. Many believe that adding more ethanol to petrol will reduce how far a vehicle can travel on a single tank. According to the Petroleum Ministry, real-world testing tells a different story.
“Initial trials and lab tests show that it does not cause a drastic drop in fuel efficiency,” an official from the Ministry said. “For most compliant vehicles, the change is minimal — around 1 to 2% — which is well within acceptable limits.”
In practical terms, this means a car that gives 20 km per litre on E10 might give 19.6 to 19.8 km per litre on E20. For most users, this change is barely noticeable — especially when compared to the environmental benefits and reduced emissions.
Improved Engine Performance in Newer Vehicles
Interestingly, the Ministry added that modern vehicles calibrated for E20 can actually see performance gains. Ethanol has a higher octane rating than petrol, which can result in cleaner combustion, smoother engine response and lower knocking. Automotive manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki, Honda and Tata Motors are already producing E20-compatible engines.
Drivers using these newer models may even feel the difference. “The throttle feels slightly sharper and the engine runs cooler,” said a service engineer at a leading dealership in Delhi who has worked on test vehicles.
What About Older Vehicles?
For owners of older cars and two-wheelers, the Ministry suggests that occasional use of E20 is unlikely to harm the engine. However, continuous usage in vehicles not designed for it may lead to increased wear over time, especially in rubber and plastic fuel system components.
To support a smooth transition, fuel pumps in many cities will clearly label ethanol content. Consumers can choose accordingly based on their vehicle’s compatibility.

The Petroleum Ministry sees E20 as a key part of India’s clean energy future. Apart from cutting down carbon emissions, the shift to ethanol-blended petrol is expected to save nearly ₹30,000 crore in oil imports annually and give a boost to the rural economy.
“Adopting E20 is not just a technical upgrade — it’s a responsibility toward the environment and our farmers,” said an official. With the right information and vehicle readiness, the transition can be seamless and even beneficial in the long run.
