New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to organise a one-day workshop on September 12, 2025, in New Delhi for Media Nodal Officers (MNOs) and Social Media Nodal Officers (SMNOs) from Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) offices across 36 States and Union Territories. The workshop will be inaugurated by Chief Election Commissioner Shri Gyanesh Kumar in the presence of Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi.
Emphasis on Constitutional Conduct of Elections and Communication
The workshop aims to underscore that elections in India are held in accordance with the Constitution. It highlights the crucial need to communicate legal, factual, and rule-based information in a timely and coordinated manner to the public. This initiative is especially pertinent in the backdrop of a recent surge in misinformation designed to mislead citizens regarding electoral processes.
Strengthening Communication Ecosystem to Counter Misinformation
Recognising the challenges posed by misleading information, the workshop seeks to strengthen the communication framework within the offices of CEOs across States and Union Territories. The objective is to ensure fact-based responses and reinforce the dissemination of verified and accurate electoral information.
Building on Previous Orientation Programmes
The workshop will build upon the learnings from two earlier orientation programmes conducted by the Indian Institute of Democratic Practices and Election Management (IIIDEM) in New Delhi on April 9, 2025, and June 5, 2025. It aims to chart forward-looking strategies to guarantee that electors and all stakeholders receive timely, verified, and authentic information, thereby safeguarding the integrity of electoral processes.
Conclusion
This workshop represents a proactive measure by the Election Commission to equip Media and Social Media Nodal Officers with the tools and knowledge necessary for effective communication. It is a critical step towards safeguarding the democratic process by ensuring transparency, combating misinformation, and strengthening public trust in India’s electoral system.
