MUMBAI: After a resounding victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, speculation continues about who will hold key positions in the new government formed by the BJP-Shiv Sena-NCP ‘Mahayuti’ coalition. Amid this uncertainty, Eknath Shinde, the outgoing Chief Minister of Maharashtra, has indicated that he is unlikely to accept the deputy CM role in the upcoming government. Shinde’s close ally, Sanjay Shirsat, confirmed that while Shinde will remain part of the cabinet, he believes the position of deputy CM does not befit someone who has already served as the state’s top leader.
Shinde had previously expressed his willingness to accept the decision of BJP leadership regarding the future course of the state government. Despite suggestions that he might not insist on retaining the CM post, the leadership in the alliance appears divided. While the BJP has strongly supported Devendra Fadnavis as a potential CM candidate, the Shiv Sena, particularly the Shinde faction, has advocated for Shinde’s continuation in office.
As the coalition secures its majority in the assembly, there remains a significant focus on how the positions of Chief Minister and Deputy CM will be distributed among the key parties. Speculation continues, with some leaders even hinting at a rotation of leadership, though Shinde’s refusal of the deputy CM role remains a key factor in the ongoing discussions.
