A tragic ferry accident occurred off the Elephanta Islands near Mumbai on Wednesday, claiming one life and leaving three passengers missing. The ferry, which was carrying passengers from Mumbai’s Gateway of India to the Elephanta Caves, capsized around 4 p.m., sending rescue teams into action.
The Elephanta Islands, home to the famous Gharpuri caves, are a popular tourist destination, and the incident has caused concern among both locals and visitors. According to the latest reports, 55 people were successfully rescued and transported to Navi Mumbai. The city’s GT Hospital and St. George’s Hospital have been placed on high alert in case of additional casualties.
The search and rescue operations have been coordinated by the Indian Navy, Coast Guard, and marine police. Eleven Navy boats, three Marine Police boats, and one Coast Guard boat are currently involved in the efforts. Additionally, four helicopters have been deployed for aerial search operations.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis addressed the state assembly, confirming that 20 of the 35 people aboard the ill-fated ferry had been rescued. He also reported that about seven passengers remain unaccounted for, and the search operation continues.
The Coast Guard was alerted by the Harbour Master of Mumbai Port Authority immediately after the accident occurred. Efforts are still ongoing to locate the missing passengers and ensure the safety of others in the area.
This incident has raised concerns about ferry safety, especially in tourist areas, as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the tragic accident.
