Union Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi highlighted the distinct advantages of Lakshadweep and Andaman & Nicobar Islands for marine fisheries, noting their potential for tuna and other oceanic species. Active collaboration was encouraged among institutions like Fishery Survey of India (FSI) and Central Institute of Fisheries Nautical and Engineering Training (CIFNET) to deliver comprehensive training and maximize the export competitiveness of local marine products.
Capacity Building: Advanced Training and Overseas Exposure
To minimize post-harvest losses and improve product standards, highly motivated and skilled island fishermen will be offered advanced overseas training in sashimi-grade tuna handling, processing, and cold chain techniques. Exposure to international standards is expected to help India tap premium markets, notably Japan and the United States, where fresh tuna fetches higher prices.
Hands-on Initiatives and Technical Programs
FSI and CIFNET have presented detailed outreach activities, including specialized technical courses, hands-on field demonstrations, and technology dissemination drives. These are tailored to enhance practical and theoretical skills of fishermen and personnel, ensuring quality improvements across the value chain in the islands.
