Jammu & Kashmir, 4 September 2025(flood relief measures) — Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and other portfolios, Dr. Jitendra Singh, convened a high-level review meeting with the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu and Deputy Commissioners of flood-affected districts Doda, Kishtwar, Ramban, Kathua, and Udhampur to assess ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts following unprecedented rainfall, cloudbursts, and flash floods in the region.
Enhanced Weather Monitoring Infrastructure Under Mission Mausam
Dr. Singh informed that the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) will install four additional weather radars under Mission Mausam in Jammu & Kashmir to improve district-wise weather forecasting and early warning systems, supplementing the three radars already operational. The Ministry of Earth Sciences and IMD are tasked with providing targeted forecasts specifically for vulnerable north Indian states including J&K, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Punjab.
Coordinated Central and State Government Response
The Minister highlighted the continuous monitoring of weather patterns by officials including Secretary Ministry of Earth Sciences Dr. M. Ravichandran and DG IMD Dr. M. Mohapatra. Two high-level central teams comprising officers from various ministries have been dispatched to evaluate on-ground damage and coordinate relief. These teams will submit comprehensive reports to the Government of India, while state governments conduct parallel assessments.
Focus on Relief Supplies and Community Welfare
Dr. Singh praised the district administration’s relentless efforts, despite challenging weather, to facilitate timely supply of ration kits, medicines, potable water filters, and shelter. Additional relief from the Minister’s MP funds is being deployed, including emergency rations and medical kits, ensuring that no family feels neglected during the crisis.
Situation in Affected Districts

Doda: Prompt action in Bhaderwah prevented large-scale inundation by breaking culverts and diverting water flow using heavy machinery, protecting lives and properties.

Udhampur: Relief camps sheltering over 2,000 people have been set up; restoration of damaged roads and utilities is underway.

Kathua: Relief camps accommodate nearly 1,900 displaced persons. Road and water supply restoration continue amid logistical challenges.

Ramban: The cloudburst and landslides on 29 August caused loss of life and property; evacuation and restoration work continues on roads and utilities.

Kishtwar: Swift rescue operations saved lives amid landslide risks; injured persons are receiving medical care.
Whole-of-Government and Society Approach
Dr. Singh lauded cooperation from civil society and local volunteers who acted as first responders. He emphasized the need for collective efforts to manage relief and rehabilitation efficiently, underscoring the resilience and courage of local administrations.
National Leadership Oversight: flood relief measures
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation, with the latter having constituted an Inter-Ministerial Committee to visit Kathua and oversee the ongoing relief and recovery operations.
