The victim, a resident of Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, was traveling with his friend, Kapil Kumar, when the attack occurred around 3:30 am. The violent assault only came to light when the train arrived in Nagpur several hours later, raising serious concerns about passenger safety on overnight routes.

The Railway Police Force acted swiftly, arresting all four suspects near Wardha while the train was still in motion. The accused, identified as Sayyed Samir (18), Mohammed Faiyaz Hasimuddin (19), M. Sham Koteshwar Rao, and a minor, all hail from Hyderabad.

When Kumar woke up and alerted other passengers, the assailants escalated the violence. Raj intervened to defend his friend, which led to him being mercilessly beaten by the gang for nearly 30 minutes.

Raj, who suffered severe internal injuries, went to the toilet around 6:30 am, where he vomited blood and lost consciousness. The Railway Protection Force was notified by a pantry car attendant as the train passed through Hinganghat in Wardha. The suspects, who had boarded the train at Secunderabad, were arrested before they could disembark at Nagpur.
