Gautam Gambhir Backs Yashasvi Jaiswal for India’s Captaincy Amid Disagreement with Selectors

With no plans for a three-captain system across formats, the selectors aim to strike a balance between experienced leadership and grooming young talent, making the decision for India’s next captain a critical one for the team’s future.

Breaking News

The future of India’s cricket captaincy has become a hot topic of debate, with coach Gautam Gambhir and the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee expressing differing opinions during the recent BCCI review meeting in Mumbai. The meeting, which also assessed current captain Rohit Sharma’s tenure, revealed discussions about potential successors for leadership in Test and ODI formats.

Rohit Sharma’s Stance

Rohit Sharma, whose form has been a concern, reportedly informed the selectors that he would continue as captain until the board appoints a successor. He also assured his full support to the next captain. The selectors decided to retain Rohit as ODI skipper at least until the Champions Trophy, leaving the decision on his long-term replacement pending until the tournament concludes.

Clash Over Captaincy Candidates

While Jasprit Bumrah emerged as a likely candidate to take over Test and ODI captaincy, Gambhir proposed 21-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal as a long-term option. In contrast, the selectors reportedly favored Rishabh Pant, who has prior captaincy experience, having led Delhi in domestic cricket and the Indian team during a T20I series against South Africa in 2022.

To manage Bumrah’s workload as a fast bowler, the idea of appointing a strong vice-captain was discussed, mirroring Australia’s strategy with Pat Cummins.

The Case of Suryakumar Yadav

Suryakumar Yadav, currently India’s T20I captain, was also considered for ODI leadership. However, his inconsistent performance in the 50-over format diminished his chances of succeeding Rohit.

With no plans for a three-captain system across formats, the selectors aim to strike a balance between experienced leadership and grooming young talent, making the decision for India’s next captain a critical one for the team’s future.
