In Botad district, Gujarat, a 39-year-old man was found dead by suicide on December 30, leaving behind a video message accusing his wife of mental harassment and urging his family to “teach her a lesson” for causing his death.
The man’s father reported that his daughter-in-law frequently quarreled with his son and often returned to her parents’ home, contributing to his distress. Prior to his death, the deceased had visited his in-laws to persuade his wife to return, but she declined. Upon returning home, he recorded the video message before taking his life.
Based on the father’s complaint, local police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the wife under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), pertaining to abetment of suicide. An official from the Botad rural police station confirmed the registration of the case and stated that further investigation is underway.
This incident is part of a concerning trend of suicides linked to alleged spousal harassment. In Bengaluru, a 34-year-old software engineer recently ended his life, leaving a detailed note accusing his wife and her family of mental harassment and extortion. Similarly, in Delhi, a café owner died by suicide amid an ongoing divorce case, with his family alleging harassment by his wife.
